Facing the Stranger: Across the Divide
Guestbook Project Documentary
2010
Filmed in Serbia and Kosovo in 2010, this documentary focuses on the ethnically and geographically divided town of Mitrovica. After the Kosovo war in 1999, the Serbs retreated north of the river Ibar and the Kosovo Albanians to the south. Since then, the two parts of the city have been governed as separate municipalities, neither of which recognizes the other. This segregation is marked by ethnic, religious, linguistic, and cultural differences.
While political reconciliation is difficult to come by, there is hope that an emerging generation of young people from both sides may imagine a way forward.
This documentary was produced by Petra Belković Taylor and James Taylor with support from The Forum for Cities in Transition, The Institute for the Liberal Arts at Boston College, and the Guestbook Project
