The Politics of History

Guestbook Documentary
2016

“Until there is a common vocabulary and a shared historical memory, there is no peace in society, only the absence of war.” — Chris Hedges

In April 1941, Axis powers invaded the Western Balkan region and established the Independent State of Croatia under a puppet government built upon fascist and extreme Roman Catholic ideologies. This Ustaše regime quickly implemented a systematic policy of racial extermination of Jews, Serbs, and Roma peoples, set up concentration camps throughout Croatia and Bosnia. In 2016, a group of young Croatians come together to discuss nationalism, identity, and the shift in education and culture seeking to rewrite a controversial period in its national history.

This film was produced by Schuyler Pals with support from the Guestbook Project.
