"I have heard you and I forgive you"

August 31, 2017

Olga Macingwane was injured when a bomb exploded in the supermarket where she was shopping with her sister-in- law. It was Christmas Eve of 1996. 13 years later, one of the bombers – a 19 year-old boy – asked to meet with the victims. Olga heard his story; and then she forgave him.

"I cannot hate you...
I have heard you and I forgive you."

Olga is the embodiment of the resilience of the people of Worchester, South Africa, that broke though a traumatic experience of destruction and pain and rebuilt their community through the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. The story of her visit to the man responsible for her injuries gives strength to those facing similar traumas and can be a powerful force in unifying communities divided by violence and mistrust.

We share the story of Olga Macingwane so that we can also be inspired by her example and take the leap of faith needed to restore peace and understanding in our lives and communities.

Take 10 minutes to listen to her story in this video produced by our partner the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation.
